This weekend the Lincoln Heritage Council of the Boy Scouts of America will recognize Douglas Wagoner of Lanesville and Douglas Sellers of Laconia for their long time service to youth in their respective communities.

As a movement whose leadership is overwhelmingly volunteer, the Boy Scouts of America recognizes the need to acknowledge the invaluable services that men and women render to youth. Of the hundreds of awards that the BSA presents each year to those in the local council, the Silver Beaver is the most prestigious and the highest award that can be bestowed at the council level. The recognition is granted by one's own peers in Scouting for distinguished service to youth in Scouting and in other organizations.

Wagoner, 35, of Lanesville has been involved in Scouting since his youth. An Eagle Scout with five Eagle Palms and the son of an Eagle Scout, Wagoner currently serves as Scoutmaster of Lanesville’s Troop 525 sponsored by the Lutheran Laymen’s League at Camp Cedarbrook and is also an Associate Adviser of Venture Crew 12 in New Albany. He was previously Scoutmaster of Lanesville’s Troop 25, now of Georgetown. In his 23 years of service to Scouting, Wagoner has also served in various positions on the district committee and at the council level, including several Wood Badge staffs. He was recently appointed one of the Scoutmasters for the Lincoln Heritage Council contingent to the 2005 National Scout Jamboree. He has been previously recognized with the Scouters Training Award, the Scouter’s Key, Wood Badge, District Award of Merit, and the Vigil honor in the Order of the Arrow. In addition to Scouting, Wagoner’s service to youth includes providing outdoor educational opportunities as a Leave No Trace Master Educator, Junior Achievement, Indiana University Outdoor Adventures, and the Indiana State Police Junior Pioneer Campouts. Professionally, Wagoner is a Sourcing Leader with LG&E Energy Services Inc. in Louisville and an adjunct instructor at Indiana University.

Sellers, 39, of Laconia, has been involved in Scouting since 1991, when his oldest son joined Cub Scouts as a Tiger Cub. He currently serves as Scoutmaster of Troop 47 based at Elizabeth United Methodist Church in Elizabeth. Prior to Scoutmaster, Sellers held the position of Cubmaster of Pack 47 at South Central Elementary School. In the past 13 years, he has also served in various positions at the district level, including District Activities committee for Cub Scouts and was on staff for a district Webelos Leader Outdoor training. He has been previously recognized with the Scouters Training Award, the Scouters Key, Wood Badge, Buckskin and Presidents Award and the District Award of Merit. He is also an Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow. In addition to scouting, Sellers serves as Stroke and Turn Judge for his son’s swim team, the South Harrison Seahawks. He is a former founding board member for the new Harrison County YMCA, working with the Y and the Friends of Harrison County Youth to help design and layout the new sports facility at Governor Frank O’Bannon Park. He has also worked with the South Central Elementary PTO in layout and design for their outdoor lab. Professionally, Sellers is a Landscape Designer and Associate Planner with the engineering firm of Birch, Trautwein, and Mims, Inc. in Louisville.

Both Wagoner and Sellers will be recognized at 3 pm on Sunday at the Lincoln Heritage Council’s Annual Recognition Banquet to be held at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville. The council serves over 42,000 youth members within 25 counties in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
