We are still working on our history, so if anyone can help us fill in the blanks, please email the webmaster with the info. Also, we are looking for old photos of the scout troop in action, scoutmasters, Eagle Scouts, and anything else you think we might be interested in. Scan the photos and email them to the web master. We would really love more info and photos from the period 1950 - 1980.
The troop presently has about 30 scouts and a very active troop committee. Without these active and supportive parents, the troop would not be where it is today. We also have an active patrol leader council. The boys plan for the activities that they enjoy, not what mom and dad want them to enjoy.
A brief listing of our troop’s past activities and achievements are listed below:
2013: It is with great sadness that, apparently due to lack of parental volunteers, both Pack 47 and Troop 47 are now inactive. Many thanks to the previous Scoutmaster (Mark Hertle) who stuck around for two years after his own boys moved on from Troop 47. He even volunteered to set up summer camp for the active boys in the troop and helped them at camp one last time in 2013. He told the parents of the boys that he would be retiring from scouting after summer camp and one of them needed to step up to take things over. Unfortunately none did and that was the last scouting event for Troop 47. Hopefully someday, a parent will see the many benefits scouting provides to the boys (and the parents!!) and be willing to re-start Troop 47. Those of us who served over the years sure hope so.
2008: We advanced two more boys to the Eagle Scout rank this year (Josh Sams and Sam Cunningham). The troop added 7 boys in February that bridged over from Pack 47. This year we went skiing at Paoli Peaks again in January. Our March activity was ice skating. We participated in Memorial Day festivities at Elizabeth by marching in the parade, assisting with the American Legion ceremony, folding veterans coffin flags, and holding a flag retirement ceremony. We camped with the Cub Scouts at South Harrison Park. We had a joint car wash/bake sale and campout in June. We did a Seven Springs Lake clean up fundraiser, we did a Posey Township cemetery clean up fundraiser, and we had several parents work at the South Harrison Park concession stands during baseball season as an ongoing fundraiser. Many people worked very hard in support of Troop 47 and they all deserve much thanks. Truly a full year of activities for our boys. For the year we awarded 72 merit badges and 14 rank advancements. Eagle Scouts Josh Sams and Sam Cunningham both earned their Bronze Eagle Palms. And we welcomed a new scoutmaster (but an old friend), Mark Hertle, as he took the reins from Doug Sellers.
